EMBEDDED: A SYSTEM OF THOUGHTS

An Embedded system is a combination of hardware, software and other technical components dedicated to do a specific task. Embedded systems are used in various applications covering all aspects of modern life like digital cameras, consumer electronics, surgical systems, building automation, automotive electronics etc. Microcontrollers have played a major role in emerging technological trends and development of embedded systems.

8-bit controllers were used for long time and are still powering the market in various applications like home appliances, smartcards and automotive body electronics. But for higher performance, these controllers have enhanced to 16-bit to 32-bit, as used in cell phones, media players and routers. Embedded devices for a long time were operating as stand-alone systems. However with the arrival of wireless connectivity, the framework changed. Short range wireless protocols like Bluetooth, Zigbee, RFID and long range protocols such as Wireless Local Area Network(WLAN), WiMAX etc will have ubiquitous application in future.

Robotics is a major application of Embedded Systems. Recently, researchers at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology(EPFL), Switzerland, have developed a robot that can be controlled through thoughts and brain signals. Prof. Jose del R. Millian, created this robot mainly for disabled people giving them a sense of independence. Embedded system is a subset of “Internet of Things”. The fast growth of the IoT is changing our world and the enormous reduction in price for typical IoT components is making people to innovate new designs and ideas to make products at home. It is actually "A network of Internet connected objects able to assemble and interchange data." The IoT would interface with temperature, position, pressure, analogue-to-digital converters (ADCs), digital-to-analogue converters (DACs), etc. Arduino and Raspberry Pi can also interact with IoT.
